GOOD NEWS: The reviews are in and they're pretty favorable. (If you don't care about reviews, don't bother reading any further.)
Sean O'Connell in the Washington Post writes, "It stands apart from the rehash pack by accomplishing something rival remakes rarely do: It improves on the premise it has been handed, producing a modernized version of a decades-old story that's superior to its predecessor in virtually every aspect."
Here's a long one:
Directed by Craig Gillespie ("Lars and the Real Girl") from a script by the television powerhouse Marti Noxon ("Mad Men," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"), "Fright Night" honors the original - written and directed by Tom Holland, with Chris Sarandon as the blood sucker next door - without falling into the traps of slavish fandom or smarty-pants spoofery. The old "Fright Night" was both self-aware and effectively scary, and if this one seems to prefer gruesome digital effects to old-fashioned bump-in-the-night spookiness, it still succeeds in keeping the audience both tickled and anxious."[Director Craig] Gillespie's movie is light and enjoyably foul, and part of the pleasure of watching is the evident pleasure everyone involved had in making it," writes Wesley Morris in the Boston Globe.
The New York Times
In Rolling Stone, Peter Travers writes, "Director Craig Gillespie ("Lars and the Real Girl") is wise to just turn [Colin Farrell and David Tennat] loose. Voila! Black magic."
Don't get us wrong; there are unfavorable reviews out there, too. The good far outweigh the bad thus far.
How about you? Will see "Fright Night"? Let us know in the comments.
